ClimateWorks Australia today welcomed the release of the Victorian Government’s Climate Change Framework which sets out a long term plan for achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
ClimateWorks Australia Acting CEO, Scott Ferraro said the Government’s announcement of an emissions reduction target of 15-20 per cent on 2005 levels by 2020 was achievable.
Mr Ferraro said ClimateWorks research, in partnership with ANU, for the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network Deep Decarbonisation Pathways Project was used as the basis for the Victorian Climate Change Framework.
“Our modelling shows four pillars are required to substantially reduce emissions across the economy. This includes greatly improved energy efficiency across all sectors, near zero emissions electricity, switching to lower carbon energy sources in transport, buildings and industry and improving agricultural emissions and carbon forestry,” he said.
“We are pleased the Victorian Government has adopted this approach as the most comprehensive way to reduce emissions across the state’s economy.”
Mr Ferraro said Victoria’s new Climate Change Act was an important tool for driving climate change action across the state through to 2050.
“ClimateWorks was represented on the three member Independent Review panel which recommended major changes to Victoria’s Climate Change Act 2010,” he said.
“The changes adopted by the Government will ensure the state’s emissions reduction targets align with the Paris Agreement of limiting global temperatures to well below 2 degrees Celsius and embeding climate change action across government operations and decisions.”
Mr Ferraro also welcomed the Government’s announcement that it was joining the global
Under2 MOU, a collection of 165 states and regions that have committed to over 80 per cent emissions reductions by 2050.
“Victoria now joins South Australia and the ACT as Australian signatories to the agreement with these states also committing to a net zero emissions reduction target by 2050,” he said.
